Ohhh, more testing

During the Renaissance, even though Florence and Venice called themselves 'republics', they were definitely not democracies. In Florence, the guildsmen who made up the base upon which memebers of government were drawn constitued of about only 2% of the popolation. In Venice, the 'merchant-nobles' contributed approximately 5%.
